AMiTY

02/11/2009 · Leave a Comment

Wolverhampton born Amy Forrester is the latest acoustic hit to meet the South East. Self described as the love child of Nick Cave and a happy PJ Harvey, the girl aims high, and totally succeeds.

Unlike many acoustic style performers, AMiTY combines vocals with a guitar, a snare drum, and a sampler and what ever else is lying around to create music that makes you want to know everything about her and listen to her unbashful lyrics. It’s music that would make many female acoustic artists jealous due to its creative and exciting new edge.

You can catch her performing at quite a few places in London and Brighton over the next few months, and find out more at her Myspace here. Meanwhile, have a listen to her in the two songs below and you can see what I mean.

Lulu & the Lampshades

Heloise, Luisa, Dan and Jemma make up the latest brilliant new four piece from London. Due to release their first single, ‘Feet To The Sky’ / ‘Rose Tint’, on new imprint Voga Parochia later this month they are already having comparisons thrown left right and center around the internet, most notably Peggy Sue & the Pirates (who they are supporting in November) due to their quirky and if somewhat basic way of making music with what ever surrounds them- from ice cream pots to luggage whilst combining their unusual vocals to make remarkable music.

The video below pretty much sums this all up:

This is Beth Jeans Houghton:

Beth plays acoustic and mesmorising folky music, with pretty incredible guitar skills to match her breathy and subtle vocals. Along with her band Hooves of Destiny she has been and continues to play at almost every folk music festival in the World this year, whilst supporting Devendra Banhart and Woodpigeon amongst many others.

You can catch up with all her news here at her official website and check out her Myspace for a few more songs.

Here are a couple of songs recorded by BBC6 Music:

This is Lucy Hill:

Lucy Hill @ The Troubadour

Lucy Hill @ The Troubadour

Yesterday we saw her perform at the Troubadour supporting Cosmo Jarvis and Pippa Drysdale. And she is really rather good. Her and her side kick/guitarist Bob played really quite brilliant and melodic folky angst which you can hear below.

Here is her Myspace where you can see who she has been compared to and ‘influenced by’. Joni Mitchell being the main one. Not bad for a few reviews eh.

Spellweaver

This above is my friend Holly Ray and trance producer Spellweaver who have recently collaborated  to create some pretty thumping trance tracks. I’ve added on below which is Harder, and today you can show your support by buying the track for a measly £1.49 right here from Trackitdown.

Fix Ya Face

NKOTB (how up to date am I!?) Mpho Skeef who fits in with the new trend of non R&B, mix-race London females, such as The Cock and Bull Kid, Remi Nicole and the American soul-pop specialist Janelle Monae, is certainly one to watch.

Using a sample of one of my favourite songs by Martha and the Muffins – Echo Beach on her first official single due out in July, here are her first two songs for your audio delight.
